Pushover Alerts - how to setup?

With Pushover your members can send critical notifications amongst each other. This is configured per group. The highest level possible even ignores Do Not Disturb mode on your phone, when every second counts.

Why would you want this?

  • Your group is locked-in.
  • Instant, high-priority alerts for urgent situations.
  • You can step away from your screen, knowing vital alerts will find you.

[!rick] This feature is exclusively aimed towards private groups. Everyone is able to push alerts.

For members :busts_in_silhouette:

Download the app

For iPhone/MacOS or Android, also available in your browser.

[!notice] To use Pushover, there is $5 dollar one-time fee and possible API costs if you go over 10k alerts/mo.

Subscribing to alerts

Reach out to your group owner/admin for an invite link to the Pushover channel for your group.

Sending alerts

These commands only work if valid keys are configured for the chat. Any member can use these commands at any time.

  • :police_car_light: /alert optionalMessage - priority alert (ignores Do Not Disturb)
  • :warning: /push optionalMessage- normal alert
  • :alien_monster: /ptest- for testing, won’t trigger sound or vibration

[!discord] In Discord, you can also use the “App” function [1] when right clicking any message. Scroll down to learn how to setup @role alerts.

Legacy command

If no Pushover keys are configured, this command only pins a message.

  • :pushpin: /ping - this command pins a message in the chat, and sends the same alert to Pushover as critical alert. This command can only be used by admins, whereas the above commands work for all members.

[!warning] This part is meant for group owners/admins. Setup is quite easy, and should take about 5-10 minutes.

Creating an account

Register your account with Pushover. Also log in with your account on the app. Next up, we will be collecting two API keys needed for the setup.

Getting you app API key

We need a Application/API token. Go and create one, each application can send 10,000 messages per month for free, after that, prices start at $50 for 10k alerts.

Pick a name, additionally find a outstanding icon, these may be shown depending on your device.

Go to your new app at the bottom of the homepage and take note of the API Token/Key.

Creating the invite link

At the same page, just below your API key, you can generate invite links to have your group members join.

Look for “Subscription” and “Create a new subscription code”. When creating the invite link, just fill the Description, Author and set the type to Group, give the group a name e.g. “Lab Members”.

You may now find the invite link to share to your member at the API page.

Getting your group API key

When the group and invitelink are created, go back to the homepage and look for Your Delivery Groups, click the newly created group, and take note of this Group Key.

Setting up Rick

Run /chatid in the group where you want to setup alerts for and take note of it. It should start with -100 (supergroup).

API keys can only be configured in your DM’s with Rick. We need to run two commands.

  • /setpushgroup groupKey yourChatId
  • /setpushapp apiToken yourChatId

[!discord] In Discord, simply use the command helper. These commands are private by default, you can just set it up in your server.

Tips & Tricks :sparkles:

Browser Alerts

You may also configure your browser to receive alerts. This counts as one device, at one time fee of 5$, but the benefit of this is that clicking the alert instantly opens your Telegram app and jumps to the message.

Discord Role Alerts

In Discord you can configure any role to trigger a pushover alert. Simple use the /setpushrole command and select the role + mode (normal or critical) for this role.

This command works like a toggle, if the role was configured before, this command will unset the role the next time you try to configure the role.
