Starknet is a **Layer-2 zk-rollup on [Ethereum](https://talk.markets/t/ethereum-erc-20-cheatsheet/270?silent=true)** that runs transactions off-chain and proves them on [Ethereum](https://talk.markets/t/ethereum-erc-20-cheatsheet/270?silent=true) using **STARK zero-knowledge proofs**.  
It uses its own **Cairo virtual machine** instead of the EVM to achieve much higher scalability while inheriting [Ethereum](https://talk.markets/t/ethereum-erc-20-cheatsheet/270?silent=true)’s security.
